1999 > 2012

Hey there! Last night I saw the awful, awful movie 2012 for the pure purpose of scouting out goodnites references. My roomate and I suffered through all 2 1/2 + hours of mindless dialogue, loud special effects and that silly puppy dog Cusak face... Cusak is much like Matthew Broderick, they should have been suspended in wax on Dec 31st 2000. We want to just remember the happy times, the "Better Off Dead"s and the "Ferris Buellers", the dorky but headstrong Broderick of "Biloxi Blues" and the quirky puppeteer in "Being John Malkovich", these guys used to rock my world. They made some of their best movies right around the 2000's, and then there was a decade of fail. I love Election.

Regardless, it's pretty obvious big name movies are pretty much reel-to-reel advertisements, from the Krispy Kreme over-saturation in "Fight Club" to "Whip-it" in which Drew Berrymore, covergirl spokesperson, pimps covergirl products in her self directed debut. You can't even avoid that stuff if you run the project, or more likely she just wanted to make some money just in case the movie fails miserably, which it did. Product placement is bad business, unless it adds to the the realism of the film, an example would be this 2012 clip, crazy old hermit Woody Harrelson is drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon, a crappy, cheap beer that lunatics and hipsters drink, so it makes sense and isn't detestible, "AdCameo" would be the politically correct name. As for the Goodnites, there was no clear reason for the the Goodnites, had nothing to do with the story just a way to further emphasize the reliance of one character to another, the kid could have asthma or leg braces to fulfill the same device. Therefore, Goodnites just wanted to sell some diapers, and used this movie as a way to say "caring moms buy Goodnites!"

Again with the Pabst, when they talk about Pabst Blue Ribbon in one of my favorite films of all time, "Blue Velvet" they use it as a way to subjugate 2 characters, Kyle McLaughlin's character is expresses his love of Heineken, and when he meets Frank (Dennis Hopper) its used to show his softness, but also doesn't go well for Pabst, because Frank is definitely not a positive role model for the product, what with all the rape and murder. Most good directs do use real products, and even have to pay for them occasionally, but the concept of "we'll give you a ton of money to put a tons of our diapers in your movies" is pretty cheesy, I'd complain more if I didn't love diapers oh so much :)

Here's the video, enjoy!

  1. Y'know, when I heard of 2012, I was rather convinced it wasn't worth watching. Then, like you, I heard about Goodnites being in it and I decided to watch it.

I never thought I'd watch a movie for the advertising.
